Chapter 8

Sadie tapped her fingers impatiently on the steering wheel as she sat in her car and waited in the parking lot. Her eyes were glued to the main entrance to the police station. She’d had to negotiate long and hard, but she’d finally won. She’d finally convinced Ken to say a good word for Palmer’s sake.

“You don’t know Palmer like I do,” Sadie had told him. “If you did, you would know that there is no way he could be involved in this murder. Palmer works hard to solve murders, not commit them.”

“That’s all good and well, Sadie,” Ken had argued. “But Elmer’s body was found on Palmer’s property. For now, what little evidence we have points to Palmer.”

“Kenwood,” Sadie had said in all seriousness. “If you know me at all... if you trust me at all... at the very least put in a good word for Palmer and convince the judge to set a reasonable bail so that I can get him out of there.”

Finally, as she sat there going over and over that conversation, Palmer walked out of the police station. He looked tired and slightly upset as he squinted at the late afternoon sun. He’d also lost a few pounds during his short stay in jail.

Sadie tapped lightly on the horn to get his attention. Forcing a tired grin, Palmer turned to head her way.

“Why do I feel like a sixteen year old punk getting bailed out of jail by his mother?” he said as he opened the car door and got in.

“Yeah,” Sadie said with a teasing grin. “But you look so much older.”

He glared at her. “Thank you. I needed that additional dig.” He raked his fingers through his hair and grumbled. “And I could sure use a good shower with real soap and shampoo. Look at me. I look like...”

“Like you just got out of jail?” Sadie finished for him.

Again, he grumbled and seemed thoroughly unhappy.

She laughed and kept her gaze steadily on him as he buckled up. “Come on, Palmer. Lighten up. I know these past few days haven’t been fun, but I got you out, didn’t I?”

“Yes. And thank you,” he said as he tried to hide his pleased grin.

“You’re very welcomed,” Sadie said as she started the car and pulled out of the parking lot.

“Gee,” Palmer said wistfully as he looked out the car window. “You never know how good fresh air smells until you’ve been deprived of it... until you’ve had to breathe in stale, dusty air. You never fully appreciate just how beautiful greenery is until you’ve been staring at a grey wall for days on end. You never really understand the importance of freedom until you’ve been held against your will.”

“I’m not saying it was easy, but you’ve been in jail for four days, Palmer,” Sadie said. “Don’t you think you’re being a little too overly melodramatic?”

“Four days is four days too many. I’ve wasted far too many days in there when I have so much work to do.
